On October 6th, following our General Members Assembly from 18.30-19.30h, we will host Sytze Kampen to have a lecture about the European Robotic Arm (ERA), starting at 19.30h in the KIVI building in The Hague.

ERA was launched in July this year and will begin operations in the coming weeks. The robotic arm is to a large extend designed and built in the Netherlands under the responsibility of Airbus Defence and Space Netherlands (former Dutch Space and Fokker Space) and will be one of the biggest Dutch contributions to the International Space Station.

During the lecture Sytze will give some history of ERA (the project already started in the previous century) and will focus afterwards on the challenges in designing and developing a robotic arm to be used in a space environment. Sytze will also share some insights into the human factor and safety aspects of operating a robotic arm at the international space station which had to be taken into account during the development.

Sytze is the head of Technology of Airbus Defence and Space Netherlands since 2012 and worked as a systems engineer and later as project manager on ERA.
