Three highly stimulating international keynote speakers feature on the programme for the 14th International Naval Engineering Conference and Exhibition (INEC 2018) incorporating the long-established International Ship Control Systems Symposium (iSCSS). The duo of events is being held at Glasgow’s Technology & Innovation Centre, Tuesday 2 – Thursday 4 October. Registration is now open at www.inec.org.uk

• Broad ranging forward looking conference for both INEC and iSCSS
• Exhibition taking shape – full details online

The three keynote speakers, one from Canada, one from The Netherlands and the third from the UK will set the tone for the three-day event when they speak in the first session on 2 October.

He leads a global business that provides pioneering solutions in naval control systems, high fidelity simulators for nuclear power plants as well as modelling and simulation for space applications. He also serves on the Board of FAST Holdings Ltd., a joint venture between L3 MAPPS and BAE Systems, which established and operates the unprecedented 36-year Astute Class submarine Training Service contract with the UK MOD.

Commodore Peter Knipping MBE RNLN, Chief Naval Engineering Officer, Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) began his military career in 1982 holding a range of positions on board ships and as a staff officer in the Directorate of Materiel. From 2001 to 2005 he worked in the UK on exchange where he was responsible for Gas Turbine equipment support. During this period he helped deliver the Total Care Package Contract for the Tyne and Olympus Gas Turbines and received a British Honour (MBE) for his contribution to the project. From 2012 to 2016 he held the post of Programme Manager for the introduction of ERP in the RNLN, then in May 2016 he was appointed Commodore and took over the position of Director Materiel.

The third keynote speaker, Rear Admiral Paul Methven, Director Submarine Acquisition, Royal Navy joined the Royal Navy in 1988. His time at sea included the role as the Deputy MEO in HMS Tireless, taking the submarine from Gibraltar following its extended defect rectification period, and then becoming MEO in HMS Triumph. He then led DE&S work on the National Shipbuilding Strategy, including establishment of a new project for the Type 31 General Purpose Frigate. During these assignments, he completed the Major Projects Leadership Academy. He took up his new assignment as Director Submarine Acquisition on promotion to Rear Admiral in January 2017.

Broad range of subjects
“I am very much looking forward to introducing our newly announced keynote speakers and hearing their views on our themes ‘Inspiring Naval Engineering’ for INEC and ‘Revolutionary Technology Inspiring Ship Control’ for iSCSS. Having set the scene they will be followed by over a hundred technical papers by authors from 19 countries,” says INEC’s Conference Chairman Capt Matt Bolton RN, Ministry of Defence, UK. “I am delighted to also announce that Rear Admiral Nigel Guild CB FREng will give the Closing Summary on Thursday 4 October when the Sir Donald Gosling Awards will be presented.”

Exhibition taking shape
In addition to a forward thinking conference INEC/iSCSS 2018 also features an exhibition – exhibitors currently include Babcock International Group, BMT, IMarEST, Lloyd’s Register, L3 MAPPS, Rolls-Royce, Steller Systems. The exhibition is the location both for networking coffee, tea and lunch breaks and for ‘Speakers Corner’ where delegates can discuss in detail the innovation and concept behind papers with speakers on a one-to-one basis. Full information on opportunities offered by the exhibition is at www.inec.org.uk/exhibition

Strong support
The Principal Sponsor of INEC/iSCSS 2018 is L3 MAPPS; Rolls-Royce, BMT and Babcock International Group are all Major Sponsors. Supporting organisations are The Royal Netherlands Society of Engineers (KIVI); UKNEST; US Office of Naval Research Global (ONRG); Society for Underwater Technology (SUT); Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE); and the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE). The Official Publication is The Marine Professional with Naval Forces as Media Partner. INEC/iSCSS 2018 is also supporting the Year of Engineering, so it is highly appropriate that once again, young authors have been encouraged to enter for the Sir Donald Gosling Award, open to authors of 35 or under.
