The Future EE-professional
Omschrijving
Electrical Engineering (EE) has played an important role for many decades, an important role for our society in the past, but certainly even more in the future.
EE-professionals will be needed in more and new projects in the future facing very complex tasks. To minimize CO2 emissions most energy will have to be supplied by large windfarms and a large amount of PV panels. This alone will require a lot of engineering work, for example to cope with the large variation of the supplied electricity. But also on the demand side many things will change.
Electrification, mobility and ICT
The industry consumes a lot of natural gas now, this will have to be replaced by electricity and energy carriers produced by electricity like hydrogen. This will require complex engineering work.
Also the mobility sector will move to electrical traction using batteries and hydrogen powered fuel cells, another field where many engineers will be needed for the design and the maintenance.
There are more important examples to be given, but an important one to mention is the field of internet of things where many products will be connected to the internet. Therefore, adequate understanding of ICT technologies is needed.
ASML, DAF and Fontys
In the first part of the symposium speakers of ASML and DAF will first present briefly their companies and products and after that will speak about the role of EE engineers in their companies. They will highlight how many EE engineers are employed, what kind of work they are doing and the required skills. Team work is very important and requires special skills. Also how the career of the EE-engineer develops will be presented. Expectations how this will develop in the future.
After the break, the head of the Fontys Engineering department will talk about the education of EE-engineers. The focus is not only to teach the required technical disciplines but also to develop the social skills by letting the students work in teams on multidisciplinary projects. An important aspect is also the continuous education during the further career of an EE-engineer.
Panel Session
The last part will be a panel session where the speakers will present important challenges and where those will be discussed together with the public.
Important future challenges, what could those be?
- The first, and probably a very difficult one, is to get many more youngsters to choose for a career as an EE engineer. Probably a plan of action is needed to get students in high school or elementary school already interested.
- The second one, also not trivial, is to educate the EE engineering student well so that he/she will be well prepared to undertake the assignments. The tasks will become more complex in the future and will be multi-disciplinary. So, understanding the fields of other engineers will be very important.
- A third one is continued education need to keep up to date and learn new technologies.
