The Online IDE Master Classes is a series of state-of-the-art Master Classes for Design Professionals given by leaders in the design field: top lecturers from the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft. The content is spread out over four weeks, which offers professionals the flexibility to study at their own preferred time and place.

On 9 February 2018, the IDE Master Class ‘Digital Manufacturing’ will start. In this Master Class, you will learn about the design process and latest techniques of digital manufacturing, a disruptive technology that is changing the world of industrial design. You will put it into practice through hands-on assignments.

The Master Class is given by Jouke Verlinden, Assistant Professor Aided Design Engineering, and Zjenja Doubrovsk, PhD candidate of Design Engineering, both at Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft.

Design professionals, supervisors and managers are required to understand, use, and extract value from digital manufacturing. Industrial design is a world that has grown increasingly digital, and in which the duration from idea to implementation is shorter than it has ever been.

This course gives you an opportunity to connect to emerging trends and technologies, the instructors, and their insights. It is taught by TU Delft's leading scholars and experts in digital manufacturing. The Industrial Design Engineering faculty at TU Delft is a world leader in the application of technology, especially in applying it in a human-centered way. It is known for setting the agenda for the creative industry.

You will learn to:

  • Understand the workflow of digital manufacturing: from scanning to modelling to fabrication.
  • Judge the value of business and innovation opportunities and identify emerging concepts.
  • Understand high-tech solutions, only doable by additive manufacturing.
  • Design for 3D printing, such as parameterized and multimaterial models.
  • Use and combine a variety of software, including: Cura, Preform, Recap360, Meshmixer, Rhino, Grasshopper.

About the lecturer
Jouke Verlinden is assistant professor Computer Aided Design at Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft. Together with graduate students and staff, Jouke is working on 'Augmented Matter in Context': to enable embodied dialogues by bridging physical and digital boundaries. Jouke is editor of the AR[t} journal and the international journal on interactive design, engineering and manufacturing.

Zjenja Doubrovski is a PhD candidate at Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft. In his current research, initiated by the TU Delft and now funded by the industry, he focusses on design methods for 3D printing: how do designers need to work and what tools do they need in order to really benefit from this technology?
