Data Science Demystified

On February 21st KIVI International Engineers organized an evening session about how data science looks like in practice, both while kick-starting the data knowledge at a start-up and bridging the gap between business decisions and data solutions. Our speakers, Josine Bruin and Lara Pato, shared their insight and answered questions ranging from “How do I decide which data do I need to start saving before analyzing it?” to “What is the difference between data -engineer, -analyst and -scientist?”

29 participants joined the discussion, after enjoying some pizza, and shared the difficulties of handling, analyzing, interpreting and explaining data in their specific domains.

During the drinks after the presentations, we heard a myriad of interesting topics that you’d like to hear about. Things like practical cases where data science is applied and how, PoCs, algorithm development, the social impact of technology but also put more emphasis on socializing during the evening. Thanks for your feedback and we’ll work on it!!

Presentations can be delivered on request: kie@kivi.nl

Description

Dr. Josine Bruin, Employeneur (Sr. Data Scientist) at TMC

Talk abstract: Data science to make your work/life easier: How data science algorithms can help you focus on the right things. In this talk, I will share my view on how I think data science can be used to support people in their daily work. So that their work gets easier, they can focus on the things they want to focus on. And get better results.

Dr. Lara Pato, Data Scientist at WithLocals

Talk abstract: Using Data Science to unlock the power of Big Data to drive major business decisions... This is the current trend that is leading companies to grow faster than ever before! Or at least it’s what the hype says... But is it really what is happening in practice? In this talk I will speak about my experience as a data scientist in a fast-moving scale-up. About the challenges that come with data immaturity, limited resources and constant change. My goal is to go beyond the hype, and help managers, data experts, and other stakeholders, have more realistic expectations of how getting more value from your data often works in practice.
