Buffet lecture Climate engineering: Science fiction or future?
Scientists and engineers are investigating technologies to cool down the planet. This can be done for instance by releasing aerosols high up in the stratosphere. Herman Russchenberg (Professor Atmospheric Remote Sensing and Director of the TU Delft Climate Institute) hopes we will never have to use these techniques, but he thinks it’s wise to investigate the possibilities anyway. Frank Biermann (Professor of Global Sustainability Governance UU) sheds light on the political implications: how can climate-engineering be organized in a democratic and fair way, if at all? Philosopher Patrick Smith (PhD, UT) reflects on the ethical hooks and eyes: who is responsible when things go wrong? This event is organized by KIVI Students Twente in cooperation with Studium Generale and HV Ockham.
Buffetlezing Sleutelen aan het klimaat: Science fiction of toekomst?
Wetenschappers en ingenieurs onderzoeken technieken waarmee ze de planeet af kunnen koelen. Denk hierbij bij bijvoorbeeld aan het loslaten van kleine deeltjes hoog in de stratosfeer. Herman Russchenberg (hoogleraar Atmospheric Remote Sensing en directeur van het TU Delft Climate Institute) hoopt dat we deze technieken nooit zullen hoeven in te zetten, maar denkt dat het wel verstandig is om de mogelijkheden te onderzoeken. Frank Biermann (hoogleraar Global Sustainability Governance, UU) werpt licht op de politieke implicaties van dit soort technologieën: kan het sleutelen aan de planeet ooit eerlijk en democratisch gebeuren? Filosoof Patrick Smith (UT) denkt na over de ethische haken en ogen: wie is er verantwoordelijk als er iets mis gaat? De lezingen zijn in het Engels. Deze activiteit is georganiseerd door KIVI Students Twente in samenwerking met Studium Generale en HV Ockham.
