Signing a development agreement starts the project of building a waste to chemistry plant in Rotterdam that has to transform 360.000 ton of mixed waste into 220.000 ton of methanol. The methanol can be used for transportation fuels or it can be used as a basis in the chemical industry. Methanol is currently made mainly from natural gas or coals.

The timing of the project is favorable due to the recycling challenges for Europe. The first investment is for detailed engineering, starting a joint venture and completing the authorization procedure. The final investment for the project is to be expected later this year.

The methanol from this waste to chemistry plant can replace methanol from fossil resources and it also reduces the CO2-emission since the carbon now goes to methanol in stead of CO2. The waste is first transformed to syngas and next to methanol.
