Offshore engineering research at TU Delft: synthetic mooring ropes and thickening the Arctic Sea ice
The Technical University of Delft will present two of their latest research studies.
Experimental testing of synthetic mooring ropes
The rapid growth of floating offshore infrastructure, including floating wind, floating solar and wave energy converters, has placed a spotlight on mooring lines as key elements for the survivability, stability and efficiency of these technologies. Synthetic ropes present promising opportunities for cost reduction and improved system response. However, the behavior of synthetic ropes is complex, exhibiting nonlinear and dynamic characteristics that vary with the frequency and magnitude of the excitation. Accurate characterization of their response is essential for the effective design of offshore floating structures. Our research group specializes in evaluating these materials and their significance through dynamic experimental testing and advanced numerical simulations that incorporate material nonlinearity, ensuring robust and reliable designs for the future of offshore renewable energy.
Speaker: Dr. Oriol Colomes Gene, Professor of Computational Fluid-Structure Interaction
Field experiment: thickening the Arctic Sea ice
Can we preserve summer Arctic Sea ice by thickening it by means of large-scale flooding in winter? This question prompted a field experiment last April at Spitsbergen by researchers from the offshore engineering group at TU Delft (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ebVUj2lh9U). During the KIVI lecture we will present the results of the field experiment within the broader context of the concept and challenges related to scaling this up. We will explain what we have learned, and what that implies for the potential of this plan.
Speaker: Dr. ir. Hayo Hendrikse, Associate Professor of Sea Ice Science and Engineering
