Brazilian Pre-Salt: Overview, Initial Results and Remaining Challenges
by Bruno Moczydlower (Petrobras, SPE - Reservoir Manager for Libra Project)

The Santos Basin Pre-Salt, offshore Brazil, is a unique scenario, posing great development challenges. The microbial carbonate reservoir is unusual regarding origin and petrophysical properties; the fluids have a significant CO2 content and strong gradations; the few analogues in the world do not compare in terms of volumes, water depth and distance to the coast; and there are also flow assurance issues. Libra is one of the most significant recent oil discoveries worldwide, with recoverable volumes in the order of dozens of billions of barrels.

Considering the importance of these reserves for the Brazilian economy and the need to accelerate cash flow, Petrobras and its partners have opted for a fast track development, including extended well tests (EWTs), pilots and accelerated production systems.

Bruno Moczydlower is senior petroleum engineer at Petrobras and reservoir manager for the Libra field.

In this lecture, he will briefly describe the area, the overall strategy and the results already obtained by the first wells, EWTs and pilot projects. Subsequently, he will present a summarized view of the famous Libra block, highlighting the main challenges involving the different technical disciplines involved.
