The effect of the Deep Horizon oil spill incident on the Drilling Industry.

The outcry after the gigantic oil spillage in the Gulf of Mexico was meant to have an immediate, but also a long-lasting effect in all sectors of the Oil & Gas Industry. Drilling Practices and Oil Spill Control were revisited and measures put in place to minimize the risk it would ever happen again. But can we be assured that the occurrence of oil spill events has been reduced to a level we would all accept as low as practically possible? Have the lessons learnt resulted in a tighter and effective control by operators and regulators?

Gerard de Blok is a field visit coordinator and lecturer in Drilling Engineering at the Delft University of Technology, Department of Geotechnology. He holds a BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering.
From 1974 till 2007 he worked for Shell Int’l as Snr. Drilling Supervisor, Drilling Application Engineer, Drilling Projects Engineer and as Course Director. From 2007 to date, he worked as Wells Staff Development Manager in China, responsible for coaching, mentoring and recruiting the new generation of Chinese well engineers. He takes a special interest in well control events.
