prof.dr.ir. D.A.I. Marpaung (David) | University of Twente

Introduction:

Recent advances in photonic integration have propelled microwave photonic technologies to new heights. For example, the ability to interface hybrid material platforms to enhance light–matter interactions has led to the development of ultra-small and high-bandwidth electro-optic modulators. On the other hand, the maturity of high-volume semiconductor processing has finally enabled the complete integration of large-scale microwave photonic processor chips for example for beamforming applications.

The field has also seen the creation of a complex signal processor with multifunctionality and reconfigurability similar to electronic devices.

The meeting was focused on these recent advances in the field through talks delivered by experts both from academia and industry.

This event was organized together with URSI.(International Union of Radio Science).

Speakers:

Prof. David Marpaung  (University of Twente): Integrated microwave photonics
David Marpaung is the head of the Nonlinear Nanophotonics group and the co-chairholder of the Laser Physics and Nonlinear Optics chair. David received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Twente, the Netherlands in 2009. From 2009 to 2012 he was a postdoctoral researcher in the University of Twente, working on microwave photonic system integration for optical beamforming. He joined CUDOS University of Sydney, Australia in August 2012 as a research fellow. From 2015 to 2017 he was a senior research fellow leading the nonlinear integrated microwave photonics research activities in CUDOS University of Sydney.
David was the recipient of the 2015 Discovery Early Career Research Award (DECRA) from the Australian Research Council and the 2017 Vidi award and the 2018 START UP grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). His research interests include RF photonics, photonic integration, nonlinear optics, and phononics. For more information visit his research group website.

Dr. Maurizio Burla (ETH Zurich): High-speed plasmonic modulators for microwave photonics
Maurizio Burla is an SNSF Ambizione fellow at the Institute of Electromagnetic Fields (IEF) at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. He received a B.Sc. and a M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Perugia, Italy, specializing on microwave radiometers and multiband antennas, and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Twente, the Netherlands, where he worked on integrated optical beamformers for broadband phased array antenna systems.
From 2012 to 2015 he has worked as a FQRNT postdoctoral fellow at INRS EMT, Montreal, Canada, on microwave and all optical signal processing based on silicon photonic devices.
His current research interests include integrated photonic and plasmonic technologies for microwave signal processing, mm wave and sub THz wireless communication systems, and electronic-photonic integration.

Dr. Chris Roeloffzen (LioniX International): Optical beamforming for next generation communication
Dr. Chris Roeloffzen is Chief Scientific Officer at LioniX International. In 1998 he received his MSc degree in physics in and in 2002 his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering both from the University of Twente. In 2002 he became assistant professor in the Telecommunication Engineering Group of the University of Twente, where he was involved with research and education on integrated microwave photonic systems. In 2009 he founded of the company SATRAX, a spin-off of the University of Twente. SATRAX provided integrated RF optical beam forming modules for antenna systems to enable the growing need for bandwidth and capacity in telecommunication. These antenna systems meet bandwidth requirements for broadband terrestrial and satellite communications. SATRAX merged in 2016 with LioniX, where he continued the development of the integrated microwave photonic platform.
