The KIVI chair knows a long tradition. It is awarded by KIVI and has a research period of four years in a certain field of discipline. The chair is meant to establish a connection between scientific research at the TU Delft and the engineers in the professional practice. For the period of 2015-2019 the research will explore the topic of Big Data Science because it's a current and substantial research with applications in many engineering disciplines. Prof.dr.ir. Geert-Jan Houben leads the research, education and training in data science and technology in Delft (Delft Data Science).

KIVI Chair - Big Data Science Kick off 2015
The kick off of the KIVI chair Big Data Science was a great success. The chair was launched by Micaela dos Ramos, director of the Royal Netherlands Society of Engineers (KIVI) and prof. dr. ir. Geert-Jan Houben, professor of the KIVI chair. During the symposium, professor Houben shared the developments in the field of big data science, and he outlined the impact on society and the engineering sciences. "The interesting thing about big data is that it, just like the internet, is simultaneously fundamental and experimental," according to Houben. This ensures that a new type of research is necessary, a type of research where computer scientists are not often used to. "There are social aspects to it that are not present in a purely technical system, that makes researching it so exciting." After the plenary session a preview of the big data research was given in three parallel masterclasses.

Introduction on Big Data Science – prof. dr. ir. Geert-Jan Houben2015: Acceleration of Personalized Medicine Applications - dr. ir. Zaid Al-Ars
In the context of applying big data solutions to urgent societal challenges, Zaid Al-Ars gave a masterclass titled "Acceleration for Personalized Medicine Big Data Applications". The class discussed how big data systems enable doctors to use DNA information to help patients with diagnosing genetic disease and devise a personalized treatment plan. A number of solutions were presented and discussed, followed by a demo of a scalable big data platform, specifically designed for personalized medicine solutions.

The masterclass ‘Scalable High Performance Systems' held by Alexandru Iosup focused on data centers, one of the main requirements for an information culture. Building and maintaining a server is not profitable for most companies, this leads to an increase in massive data centers that store data. “To cope with the increasing computation demands and with the data deluge, we have already started to build complex hardware and software ecosystems, exposed as cloud services to a vast user community”, Iosup explained.

The masterclass by Alessandro Bozzon introduced the audience with the underpinning principles and "theories" of crowdsourcing and human computation. Several characterising challenges of these data science disciplines were discussed; participants actively interacted with the lecturer, to provide examples of concrete engineering and scientific issues that could be addressed by human computation techniques.
