A new sludge pretreatment technology is to be implemented in Schieland and Krimpenerwaard which has increase the amount of gas by 20% and reduce the amount of rest material by 10% based on the same input stream. The technology was proven at pilot scale already and is now to be implemented on larger scale. Completion is scheduled for mid-2020 but preferably earlier.

The improvement compared to existing technologies is in using higher temperatures during pretreatment. This results into better sludge breakdown, better mixing and less foam problems.

The technology is developed in a partnership of the Zuiderzeeland water authority, STOWA, Delft University of Technology, Royal Haskoning DHV and the Schieland and Krimpenerwaard Water Authority.
