Report of student project symposium at Fontys February 1 2017.
The symposium was a joint effort between the departments of Electrical Engineering, Mechatronic and Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Physics. The February one is the first of two symposia in 2017. Next one in July. Many topics were addressed e.g. electronics for audio playback, pick-and place system as well as an automated greenhouse for vegetables. Each project was carried out by 6 students with different backgrounds to exercise collaboration in a multidisciplinary environment.

Keynote by Rick Wielens (Open Innovation Academy)
Rick shared his firsthand experience in user led innovation and open innovation; the new normal for the way innovation is done in companies today. With 10 years in the open innovation industry and 400+ innovation projects there were many good and bad examples. Most of the corporates and organizations today are aware that innovation is about access and collaboration, not ownership. There is a clear business case for recycling the abundance of technologies and outcomes of user and market experiments from adjacent industries.

But even though open innovation is the new normal, few organizations have implemented an open innovation curriculum to cater for this innovation contact sport. What are the mindsets that you, as you are about to enter the working life need, to be a successful innovator?From his own experience, Rick will also share a user led innovation start-up: Ledskin. The company was inspired by his surprise and frustration when he witnessed the way one of his children received jaundice treatment (link below).

First symposium of 2017 series
This was the first symposium of the 2017 series.
Two projects of the current symposium were nominated for the KIVI AWARD to be decided during the second symposium July 5, 2017.

Wtb 4 Artificial Knee
The Project
When you have hurt your knee, orthopedists perform certain tests to determine whether your knee is damaged or not and what the level of damage is. Now doctors do this based on their experience and the difference between the two knees. In this project the goal was to create a model with which doctors in training can obtain the necessary experience to perform the knee-tests.The tests exist out of pulling and pressing the knee is certain ways and force, this will stretch the ligaments and give a possible displacement of the knee joint. Four categories are distinguished: category A (0-2 mm), category B (3-5 mm), category C (6-10 mm) and category D (>10 mm). The number of millimeters stands for the displacement of the knee. The doctors determine the categories based on experience. This education model mimics the four categories to teach the correct choice for each category. An artificial knee is constructed using special springs and pivots. Subsequent tests with specialists and non-specialists showed that the knee is providing the expected training options.

IPD12 Tunnel of Light
The Project
From February ’16 till November we worked on an interactive light installation for Glow 2016.We have built a unit of 6x3 meters with almost 3000 balls, 7000 LED’s and !740.000! visitors. During GLOW a spot was available for the Tunnel.Requirements were quite general but very demanding:

- Interactive Installation
- Feel the experience inside and outside
- Completely Plug & Play
- Provide an experience for a large crowd
- A full-sized installation (6x3 meters)

The interaction should be available for anyone who enters the installation. People should be able to view the entire installation from the outside to provide an experience for all spectators. The installation should be in operating by simply plugging it in to a power outlet. The tunnel contained the LEDs. Special designs for the LED configuration, their control, visual effect generation and a touch screen created a very impressive experience (see link below).
