Speaker 1:

Title: Phased array radar for extreme weather analysis and prediction (PHARA) as a powerful platform for academic research on active phased arrays

Radar has been proven to be a very useful remote sensing technology for precipitation, cloud droplet and ice-crystal measurements. However, traditional radar cannot separate individual microphysical processes in the atmosphere without making strong assumptions, leading to errors in interpretations. That is why we are working on a fast-scanning phased-array radar at Ku-band with polarization diversity (PHARA). In addition to atmospheric research,  this radar will serve as academic research and education platform for active phased arrays including multi-beam sensing and communication, multi-beam management, beamforming and waveform agility, object classification in high-resolution radar, etc.

Abstract

Alexander G. Yarovoy (FIEEE’ 2015) graduated from the Kharkov State University, Ukraine, in 1984 with the Diploma with honor in radiophysics and electronics. He received the Candidate Phys. & Math. Sci. and Doctor Phys. & Math. Sci. degrees in radiophysics from the same university in 1987 and 1994, respectively. Since 1999 he is with the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. Since 2009 he leads there a chair of Microwave Sensing, Systems and Signals. Currently, his main research interests are in high-resolution radar, microwave imaging and applied electromagnetics (in particular, UWB antennas). He has authored and co-authored more than 550 scientific or technical papers, seven patents and fourteen book chapters.

Speaker 2:

Joint Communication and Sensing – Different Approaches based on FMCW Radar

Abstract

Communication and radar technology will use common resources in the 6G mobile communications standard  (Joint Communication and Sensing). In this presentation, a few radar-centric approaches will be presented, which are mainly based on FMCW radar waveforms. Two examples are ambient backscatter modulation and vibrometry which both do not require active RF transmission.

Christoph Degen received a diploma degree and doctoral degree in electrical engineering in 2000 and 2005. Both from RWTH Aachen University. He worked on the development of antennas integrated in automotive antennas at Saint-Gobain Sekurit, Herzogenrath, Germany, 2006-2011. Since Oct. 2011 he is professor for electrical engineering at Hochschule Niederrhein – University of Applied Sciences. His research interests are wireless communication, MIMO, localization, and radar applications.
