Within the scope of the Community’s theme for 2024 ‘Focus on Demand’ a next event around Demand in the Built Environment will be organized. On March 7th we will gather in Nieuwegein. This event will be hosted by TNO and EBN.

Decarbonizing energy consumption in houses and other buildings is an enormous challenge. Whilst the Dutch Climate Agreement of 2019 had a strong focus on replacing natural gas as a heat source, developments during the last five years have shown that reality is much more complicated. Households and others in theory seem to have a few options to heat their buildings in a more sustainable manner. District heating networks might bring renewable heat to the consumer, gas in the grid might be replaced by renewable gasses or electricity can start playing a larger role through heat pumps.

In practice, however, all these potential solutions face serious challenges. After we will have kicked-off the session, Reinier Koppelaar (Deputy Director Energy Markets at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate) will set the scene with a presentation explaining the latest policy developments in The Hague.

We will then successively discuss the growing and changing electricity demand, the challenges in rolling out more heat networks and the potential role of renewable gasses in the built environment. Since the challenges are certainly not all of a technical nature, we find it important to also discuss the behavioural aspects of the transition. After presentations on these topics there will be ample opportunity to take a closer look and take different perspectives in the following panel discussion.
After the network lunch we will convene in smaller Focus Groups on specific topics as usual. We will reconvene for a final wrap up and will of course close the day with network drinks.
